The House of Krug was founded by Joseph Krug in 1843 after several years spent as an accounts clerk with Champagne Jacquesson. Today it is generally regarded as the most prestigious of all the Grands Marques, and only produces prestige Cuvees a commitment which it often uses to market and support its position. The consistent focus on quality brought the attention LVMH who recently decided to add Krug Champage to their luxury brand portfolio.
Krug is, however, still run like a family concern under the meticulous co-ordination of Henri Krug and Eric Lebel. Clos du Mesnil, the walled garden vineyard no bigger than Romanee Conti was purchased in 1976. The quality of this pure Chardonnay Cuvee was just too good in the best vintages to add to the vintage blend and the decision was made to bottle it as a super cuvee, beginning with the famous 1979 vintage. More recently came the addition of a second micro cuvee; Clos D'Ambonnay is a Blancs de Noirs Cuvee Champagne marketed towards the uber rich. But it is perhaps Krug's flagship wine, Krug Grande Cuvee which has done most to augment the reputation here, as though it is effectively a non-vintage Champagne it is only made from excellent years, and includes no less than 50% of reserve wines from as many as 10 different vintages.
