Michele Chiarlo founded his first cellar in 1956, in Monferrato located in Piedmont, Italy. Many acquisitions followed and the Chiarlo family now own 60 hectares of vineyards in the three classic growing ares of Piedmont - Langhe, Monferrato and Gavi - and there are also an extra 50 hectares which are run by the Chiarlo family with long term leasing contracts. The Chiarlo family were one of the first in Piedmont to realise that quality could be acheived by ensuring a low yield per rootsrock for top wines and a moderate one for classic wines, a method that is now scrupulously followed. The Chiarlo's family philosophy is to: "produce wines, whose characteristics faithfully represent the variety of provenance and their terroir". - http://www.chiarlo.it/index_eng.htm
