The second wine of Chateau Lafite is made from the the vines of the plateau called Carruades, a group of plots ajacent to Lafite's best vineyards, bought by the family in 1845. The higher Merlot content brings the wines to maturity much earlier than the first wine.
The 1999 vintage of Chateau Lafite is really nicely balanced with plenty of red fruit and spicy aromas. This wine is currently drinking very well and is showing the advantages of a few years of bottle age! Enjoy now or over the next few years!
