Information About Chateau Angelus

The St- Emilion estate of Chateau Angelus sits in a natural depression, surrounded by hills topped with three churches. The sound of the angelus bells at each of the churches is amplified by the geography of the location. Historically, these bells would call the laborers in the vineyards to prayer three times a day.

The estate which would become Chateau Angelus was founded in 1782 by Jean de Bouard de Laforest and has passed through eight generations of his family, currently commanded by Stephanie de Bouard-Rivoal. She, like her ancestors, is committed to the future of the estate, through excellence.

In the first classification of Saint Emilion in 1954, Chateau Angelus was named a Grand Cru Classe, but has since been promotated to the highest classification, Premier Grand Cru Classe A.

A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc cropped at 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2010 may not hit the peaks of the extraordinary 2009 or 2005, but it is another fabulous wine from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with abundant aromas of acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice and subtle toasty oak in the background. A notion of graphite emerges as the wine sits in the glass, which tends to be a characteristic of Angelus. Long, rich, dense and full-bodied with high but well-integrated tannins, it will rival the 1989 and 1990 as well as the 2009 and 2005 as one of the finest wines made at this estate. At present, the 2009 has a slight edge because of its more sumptuous texture. Nevertheless, the 2010 is a great wine with a future of at least 30 years!

The Angelus 2010 has a very ripe, quite opulent, dense bouquet with dark cherries, cassis, dark plum, Hoi Sin with good definition and a lot of ambition. The palate is full-bodied with very thick, bold tannins lending enormous structure to this Angelus.

Very deep colour here, creamy oak on the nose with touch of chocolate and mint, concentrated, macaroons. This is quite tightly wound on the palate, plenty of density with a firm spicy finish. Drink 2020-40.

Tasting Date : 05 November 2014

This is almost Black, very concentrated here, almost liqueur like on the palate, very ripe and round, the extreme concentration deters from the delicacy slightly, big, fine textured, massive extraction here leaves a mildly gritty finish. It's a bit disjointed presently but the potential is there. Drink: 2020-2040.
