Crafted from a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, Chateau Ausone's nomination from the 2010 vintage carries beautiful dark fruit aroma and some spicy tobacco, carried onto the palate by soft tannin. This is still feeling quite young, so let it rest for a few more years to develop greater depth and complexity!
Chateau Ausone is said to be built on the foundations of the villa of Roman statesman and poet, Decimus Magnus Ausonius who was born and lived in the Bordeaux region in the early 1st Century AD. The most recent classification of St-Emilion in 2012 named Chateau Ausone as a Premier Grand Cru Classe A, placing it in the top four estates in the appellation.
The vineyards of Chateau Ausone are divided, with half producing Cabernet Franc and the other producing Merlot.
The 2010 Ausone struck me as another brilliant, potentially perfect wine, which should come as no shock to people who have been following Vauthier’s work over the last decade or more. Backward and intense, this wine offers up notes of crushed chalk/rock mineralilty interwoven with blueberry, black raspberry and cassis as well as some graphite and vanillin. It is incredibly rich but at the same time precise, fresh and vivacious. This is a super wine, but it will require enormous patience from its potential suitors. Forget it for a decade and drink it over the following 50+ years.
Quite angular on the nose. Very chewy and a bit austere. Thick and dense but with a little greenness too. Will need many years in bottle to soften, I'd guess.
