The second wine of Chateau Lafite is made from the the vines of the plateau called Carruades, a group of plots ajacent to Lafite's best vineyards, bought by the family in 1845. The higher Merlot content brings the wines to maturity much earlier than the first wine.

Information About Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Allegedly, there were already vineyards on the property when the Segur family organised the vineyard in the late 17th century. Vines were planted by Jaques de Segur and the estate earned a reputation for great winemaking. Jaques’ grandson, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre, lifted the wine estate into great fame with Chateau Lafite being imbibed by Louis XV of France, the British Prime Minister, Robert Walpole and future American President, Thomas Jefferson. Despite many natural and human difficulties in the years since, Chateau Lafite is considered one of the best winemaking estates in Bordeaux and has been in the Rothschild family since 1868.

The vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Date : 01 May 2011

A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2008 exhibits graphite, sandalwood, black and red currant, chocolate and damp earth characteristics in its elegant, medium to full-bodied, fresh, lively personality. It is a delicious, luscious, already evolved wine to drink over the next 15+ years.

Rating : 91/100
