A truly exceptional vintage for Chateau Gruaud Larose. The blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. This is rich and sweet with plenty of fruit and complex spice aromas. This is quite possibly drinkable now, but the Imperial format offers the potential for further aging!
While it has spent a great deal of its history as two separate estates, Chateau Gruaud Larose has its roots in a single estate founded in 1725. It remained split for over two hundred years before the Cordier family purchased both halves of the estate, reuniting them in 1935.
The estate is located in the Medoc region, producing two wines from each of the historical estates, Gruaud Larose and Sarget.
Tasted at the chateau at their --3-vertical. The 2003 is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec that was cropped from 10th September. It was a small crop. It has a lifted, ripe, opulent bouquet that leans towards the New World in style. The palate has a sweet ripe, slightly savoury entry with low acidity and a slightly lactic, wine gum, chocolate tinged finish. It is not really my style of Gruaud Larose or for that matter, a style of Bordeaux that I appreciate. The team have surpassed this many times in this decade.
(66% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot and 1% malbec): Dark red. Spicy red plum and blackcurrant aromas on the enticing nose; this doesn't smell at all overripe or cooked, as so many other overrated 2003 Bordeaux reds do. Bright and suave on the palate, with fresh flavors of red and darker berries complicated by flint, cedar and smoke. Finishes long and surprisingly lively for such a hot vintage.
