One of the five first growths of Bordeaux, and probably the most famous of them all. Located right at the northern limit of Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend with the soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The finesse and elegance at Lafite is undeniable.

Information About Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Allegedly, there were already vineyards on the property when the Segur family organised the vineyard in the late 17th century. Vines were planted by Jaques de Segur and the estate earned a reputation for great winemaking. Jaques’ grandson, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre, lifted the wine estate into great fame with Chateau Lafite being imbibed by Louis XV of France, the British Prime Minister, Robert Walpole and future American President, Thomas Jefferson. Despite many natural and human difficulties in the years since, Chateau Lafite is considered one of the best winemaking estates in Bordeaux and has been in the Rothschild family since 1868.

The vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Date : 01 June 2000

Since I gave this wine a perfect score, I suppose some could see this as a downgrade. I found everything still there for a perfect rating, but I was just struck by how tight and backward the wine was. A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. I originally predicted that it would first reach maturity in 2011, but I would push that back by 5-7 years now, although it has 50-60 years of life in front of it. Owners of this beauty are probably best advised to forget it for 5 years. Tasted next to a 1996 several days after the 2000 tasting, the 1996, which is a perfect wine, was far closer to full maturity than the 2000.

Rating : 98+/100
