One of the five first growths of Bordeaux, and probably the most famous of them all. Located right at the northern limit of Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend with the soil made up of fine deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sand on a subsoil of tertiary limestone. It is well-drained and well-exposed to the sun. The finesse and elegance at Lafite is undeniable.

Information About Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Allegedly, there were already vineyards on the property when the Segur family organised the vineyard in the late 17th century. Vines were planted by Jaques de Segur and the estate earned a reputation for great winemaking. Jaques’ grandson, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre, lifted the wine estate into great fame with Chateau Lafite being imbibed by Louis XV of France, the British Prime Minister, Robert Walpole and future American President, Thomas Jefferson. Despite many natural and human difficulties in the years since, Chateau Lafite is considered one of the best winemaking estates in Bordeaux and has been in the Rothschild family since 1868.

The vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Date : 12 June 2009
Very dark, not quite as dark as the Duhart, really complex nose and a sweet intensity, not as irony as usual, good freshness, the palate is powerful, very well endowed, juicy acidity, oaky finish, the tannins are a little spiky, but the size and overall balance remains. Will challenge the super 2006.
Rating : 93-95
