Produced from 95% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine from Clos Haut-Peyraguey is a perfect demonstration of excellent Sauternes wine. It may be ready to drink now, but a few more years of rest could see some interesting flavour development!
Originally owned in the 18th century by one of the former Presidents of the Parliament of Bordeaux, Monsieur Pichard. Pichard oversaw the foundations of what would become a First Growth in 1855, but sadly the removal of his head during the French Revolution rendered him an unreliable estate manager and the Chateau was sold and passed through a multitude of owners.
The estate has constantly produced superb wines throughout its history and is now in the capable hands of Bernard Magrez, of Chateau Pape Clement fame.
Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey has 12 hectares of vines, mostly planted to Semillon.
Tasted single blind against its peers. The Clos Haut Peyraguey has a very fragrant, floral bouquet with a “patisserie” element: touches of lemon meringue, apricot and walnut. The palate is very well-balanced, quite taut and spicy on the entry, not quite as “flowing” as other 2007 Sauternes but very zesty and tensile. This is an excellent Sauternes that will need time to harmonize, but all the constituent parts are here.
Mid gold. Developed, cheesy nose. Very, very sweet. Amazingly so. Some miracle has been performed here. Very round and charming but very long too. This wine was difficult to spit! Punchy – big impact, quite neat. Certainly concentrated. Still quite chewy on the finish.
Pale yellow-gold. Tight nose suggests orange, lime and oatmeal. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, with a very intense flavor of peach. Finishes long and powerfully aromatic.
