Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: A blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.
The House of Krug was founded by Joseph Krug in 1843 after several years spent as an accounts clerk with Champagne Jacquesson. Today it is generally regarded as the most prestigious of all the Grands Marques, and only produces prestige Cuvees a commitment which it often uses to market and support its position. The consistent focus on quality brought the attention LVMH who recently decided to add Krug Champage to their luxury brand portfolio.
Krug is, however, still run like a family concern under the meticulous co-ordination of Henri Krug and Eric Lebel. Clos du Mesnil, the walled garden vineyard no bigger than Romanee Conti was purchased in 1976. The quality of this pure Chardonnay Cuvee was just too good in the best vintages to add to the vintage blend and the decision was made to bottle it as a super cuvee, beginning with the famous 1979 vintage. More recently came the addition of a second micro cuvee; Clos D'Ambonnay is a Blancs de Noirs Cuvee Champagne marketed towards the uber rich. But it is perhaps Krug's flagship wine, Krug Grande Cuvee which has done most to augment the reputation here, as though it is effectively a non-vintage Champagne it is only made from excellent years, and includes no less than 50% of reserve wines from as many as 10 different vintages.
Nicely coloured now, the nose is initially reticent but after 20 mins quite open and toasty, with baked apple, touch of orange, and honey, and fennel, it's clean and reserved, lovely balance now, plenty of full flavour and citrus notes, really coming into its own, definitely worth letting settle for a while, long, powerful but still elegant. Orange peel finish.

In Bond storage is facilitated at Octavian in Wiltshire, the U.K's premier wine storage facility. The conditions at this old munitions base, 100 metres below ground are unrivalled, offering temperature control, In Bond facility and full replacement value insurance. The wines are stored under each client's individual "Protection Plus" account number, fully labelled and can only be released or moved with his or her written instructions. No right of lien can be exercised over wines held on each client's behalf. Client's stock can be inspected, by arrangement, at any time excluding November & December.
