Krug Clos du Mesnil is the product of a single walled off vineyard, exclusively planted to Chardonnay, near the village of Mesnil-Sur-Oger. This is a beautiful Blanc de Blancs from a great year and is only just beginning to loosen up! Careful cellaring for the next couple of decades will see some wonderful development in the bottle.
The House of Krug was founded by Joseph Krug in 1843 after several years spent as an accounts clerk with Champagne Jacquesson. Today it is generally regarded as the most prestigious of all the Grands Marques, and only produces prestige Cuvees a commitment which it often uses to market and support its position. The consistent focus on quality brought the attention LVMH who recently decided to add Krug Champage to their luxury brand portfolio.
Krug is, however, still run like a family concern under the meticulous co-ordination of Henri Krug and Eric Lebel. Clos du Mesnil, the walled garden vineyard no bigger than Romanee Conti was purchased in 1976. The quality of this pure Chardonnay Cuvee was just too good in the best vintages to add to the vintage blend and the decision was made to bottle it as a super cuvee, beginning with the famous 1979 vintage. More recently came the addition of a second micro cuvee; Clos D'Ambonnay is a Blancs de Noirs Cuvee Champagne marketed towards the uber rich. But it is perhaps Krug's flagship wine, Krug Grande Cuvee which has done most to augment the reputation here, as though it is effectively a non-vintage Champagne it is only made from excellent years, and includes no less than 50% of reserve wines from as many as 10 different vintages.
This vintage, released in May 2016 – a year after the 2003 Clos de Mesnil due to its ageing potential – produced 13,278 bottles and 500 magnums from an ‘ideal’ growing season, with harvesting between 15-17 September.
Seamless, elegant and powerful, this wine is full of ripe white peach, apple and pear fruit, a bracing line of fresh citrus acidity and gentle toasty brioche notes. With air, it opens to reveal exotic star anise and coffee. Long, lingering and complete; a truly great wine.
At first sight, a bright and luminous golden colour of ripe wheat. On the nose, aromas of citrus fruits, white pepper and spices, slightly grilled nuts and brioche. On the palate, it is precise, pure and fresh with tension, vivacity and great balance. Notes of peach, orange, citrus fruit and liquorice are all enhanced by a very long finish
The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is brilliant right out of the gate. Vibrant, focused and crystalline, the 2002 hits all the right notes. Lemon peel, grapefruit, slate and white flowers give the 2002 its high-toned personality. The ripeness of the vintage has softened some of the typically angular young Clos du Mesnil contours. Best of all the 2002 is a rare Clos du Mesnil that drinks well right out of the gate, even if it will surely be more complex with more time in bottle. The 2002 has been absolutely stellar on both occasions I have tasted it so far. The 2002 was vinified by Nicolas Audebert, who is now making the wines at Rauzan-Ségla and Canon.
