The Brut Reserve from Charles Heidsieck is a truly remarkable cuvee among entry level Champagne wines. Sourced from sixty separate vineyard plots, the blend includes 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. The reserve wines, compose 40% of the cuvee and have been aged for an average of ten years. The finished wine is then left to age for a further six years before release.
Of the three Champagne houses bearing the name of the Heidsieck family, Charles Heidsieck is the smallest, newest and generally considered the greatest! The eponymous house was founded in 1851 by the young and exceptionally charming Charles Heidsieck. Charles was the son of Champagne merchant Charles-Henri Heidsieck and nephew of Florens-Louis Heidsieck who founded the Heidsieck & Co. and Piper-Heidsieck Champagne houses.
'Champagne Charlie' as he would become known, invested greatly in the market for Champagne wines in the United States of America. Charismatic and popular, he was a visible ambassador for both France and its most exclusive wines!
Charles Heidsieck owns no vineyards, prefering not to interfere in the craft of growers, reserving their efforts exclusively for blending and aging the perfect cuvees. The flagship cuvee is the Brut Reserve, which contains 40% reserve wines averaging 10 years old before being aged for a further three years in deep chalk cellars.
40% C, 40% PN, 20% PM
Slightly deeper than the Pol Roger NV tasted alongside, you can detect the extra maturity here, older reserve wines?,Yeasty bready aromas, soft generous mouthfeel, the mousse is evolved too, freshness at the back, nicely together zesty finish, maybe a higher dosage. this is very good for an NV.
2016: An energetic nose of smokey lime zest, peach, butterscotch and toast. The palate is round and elegant with a creamy texture, delicate lime and strawberry fruit, lively acidity and spicy, biscotti notes. A finish of fruity finesse and elegant minerality.
