The turmoils of the start of the twentieth century - most notably the First World War, destroyed more than half of the Louis Roederer estate. This led Leon Olry Roederer to restore his vineyard and buy in grapes to guarantee continuity during periods of crisis. In doing so, he produced numerous vintage wines with a consistent taste whatever the year of harvesting. This is today called Brut Premier.

Founded in 1776 louis Roederer remains an independent family business. Many inspirational figures have helped this famous house along the way to world renown non more so than Jean Caude Rouzaud who instigated the creation of a group of brilliant winemakers around the central Champagne house, taken to further heights by his son and current director Frederic Rouzaud. Roederer has gleaned great success by courting a worldwide audience, particularly in Russia where its wines were appointed official supplier to the Imperial Court. Tsar Alexander II so enamered a unique flat bottomed bottle was commissioned to house his own blend...Cristal Champagne.
62% Pinot Noir 8% Pinot Meunier 30% Chardonnay.
Invariably praised, non-vintage Champagne with a high proportion of reserve wines that had been stored in big oak barrels. Four years in the bottle before disgorging; only the first pressing is used. For several years, an appley, storable, and decently good non-vintage Champagne. Today, a Cristal-like Champagne with outstanding finesse. Richard Juhlin
This has an old vine touch on the nose, delicacy on the nose, even fine, pinot coming through through on the nose. It is fuller bodied, quite winey with good austerity and a tension here very long and masculine but elegant too. Sweetness coming through. Given 12 months cellarage it will blossom further. A very serious NV Champagne, and one wihich will work with food.
