Louis Roederer's Vintage Brut Champagne focuses on the aromatic character of Pinot Noir, which makes up 70% of the wine. The grapes are sourced from the north-easter slopes of the Montagne de Reims where the slow ripening imparts greater complexity into the finished wine. The cuvee is completed with Chardonnay, matured sur lie for four years, and then rested for a further six months post-degorgement.
The richness and acidity put this Champagne wine in the perfect form for aging for several years in order to reach maximum complexity and maturity. We would place the 2008 vintage on the edge of its drinking window, eager for a celebration in the near future or within the next few years!
Louis Roederer was born in 1809 and would later establish himself as a successful entrepreneur and patron of the arts. His relationship with the eponymous Champagne house began in 1833, after he was chosen to inherit the business, formerly known as Maison Dubois, by his uncle.
Roederer made it his goal to have every aspect of Champagne production under expert supervision, even deviating from the normal practice of buying grapes from growers to buy land in the region's best areas. The Roederer style and high quality saw business flourish worldwide; Louis Roederer's son, Louis Roederer II, matched his father in both passion and talent, and upon assuming management of the house, success continued.
In 1870, their most famous customer, Tsar Alexander II of Russia asked Louis Roederer II to reserve for him the best wines, exclusively for his personal consumption. This exquisite Champagne was held in flat-bottomed, lead-crystal bottles, crafted from specifications set by the Tsar himself in order to better view the colour, effervescence and any hazards which concern a non-democratic ruler of a nation. The wine, known as Cristal, lost its royal commission in 1917, but would not be available for public consumption until 1945.
Very pale. Tight knit yet approachable nose. Pretty youthful and taut. Decent balance but tightly wound as though it needs a little longer to unwind.
From a "beautiful vintage" (JB Lécaillon), the 2008 Vintage Brut offers a very precise and refined nose of sweet cherries and lemons. Broad and round on the palate, with orange and lemon flavors, this full-bodied, full-flavored, yet very precise 70/30 Pinot and Chardonnay blend reveals great purity, vitality, finesse and a persistent finish. Sourced from clay soils in Verzy and Verzenay (Pinot), as well as Chouilly, the dry and intense 2008 reveals a remarkable transparency and definition. In fact, this cuvée seems to fly over the palate, but also coats it with an elegant and harmonious fruit. Forty percent of the wine was fermented in oak and 20% underwent malolactic fermentation. This is a very good value.
Pale yellow. Bright, mineral-accented aromas of candied orange and nectarine, complicated by an intense floral accent and a hint of ginger. Taut, penetrating orchard fruit and citrus zest flavors pick up spiciness with air and show very good depth. Finishes dry and stony, with excellent clarity and lingering mineral and floral notes. This impressively pure, balanced Champagne has the concentration to reward cellaring.
