Champagne's Special Club is a unique collection of 27 Grower-Producers who all have the common goal of promoting the expression of terroir in the region. Their efforts and the wines that result are the best argument for further exploration of specific terroirs in Champagne. It serves as a jury of peers that ensures that every Special Club bottle sold is of exceptional quality.
Gimonnet represents the terroir of the Northern half of the Cote des Blancs with this offering. The wine is comprised of strictly Chardonnay from 54% Cramant (Grand Cru), 31% Chouilly (Grand Cru), and 15% Cuis (Premier Cru). The base wine was fermented in temperature controlled Stainless Steel and put under malolactic fermentation. The wine is finished with a dosage of 6 g/l.
The Gimonnet family has been passionately involved with growing vines for Champagne since 1750. The third generation, in the form of Didier and Olivier Gimonnet, currently manages the 16 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards and 14 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards in the centre of the Cote des Blancs. The priority of the house is to produce Champagne which is the purest expression of the grapes, mostly Chardonnay, and the terrior.
Maison Pierre Gimonnet owns a remarkable quantity of old vines. 70% are over 30 years old, and nearly half of those are over 40, including some vines which are over 100 years old. Vinification takes place in small tanks, preserving the characteristics of each small vineyard parcel and, unusual for Champagne, all reserve wines are bottled. Dosage is restricted in order to avoid masking the subtle distinctions of the terrior.
