Preliminary reviews for the 2008 vintage of Pol Roger's Brut Champagne have been outstanding, and will almost certainly be counted among the legendary vintages of Champagne Pol Roger. This cuvee contains around 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, exclusively from Grand and Premier Crus, aged in Pol Roger's Epernay cellars for eight years.
Upon release, this will be drinking rather well, but has significant potential to age for a further decade to develop richness and complexity.
Those who can be tempted by a spoiler should look for Pol's Brut Reserve NV, as this will contain a significant quantity of wines from 2008...
Champagne Pol Roger was founded in 1849 and now owns 87 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Vallée d'Epernay and on the Côte des Blancs. Its cellars run for 7km and are on three levels, the deepest known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse' at 33m below street level. As the name suggests this is where the wine undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle. The fact that this deep cellar is at 9o or less, rather than a normal cellar temperature of 11-12o, thus prolonging this fermentation, is one contributing factor to the quality and particular style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.
Really quite broad and ripe on the nose with mildly floral notes and a hint of putty. Really very dramatic! Even a hint of marzipan. Creamy texture with a little bruised apple acidity. Admirably long. Really exciting. Is this a worthy successor to the 2002?
