The vineyard was planted in 2001 and harvested late for richly concentrated and thick skinned Mourvedre grapes. Throughout a week of fermentation, regular punching down ensured a full extraction of colour and tannin before maturation in French and American oak barrels for fourteen months. Warm spices surround a juicy core of intense black cherry. Enjoy!
The Spice Route Wine Company began with a tale of disbelief. Charles Back, discovered a tank of Sauvignon Blanc of immense quality in a Swartland cooperative and could barely be convinced that this wine had come from the region. Hot summers, cold winters and dry soil make the production of good vines for wine very difficult. Desperate for proof, he traveled out a neglected tobacco farm to find the oldest plot of Sauvignon Blanc vines in the whole of South Africa.
Inspired, Charles Back began searching for more plots with untapped potential and started the Spice Route Wine Company. Hiring winemaker, Eben Sadie, the two tuned the methods in the vineyard and in the winery to make wines which express the terroir.
Today Charl du Plessis, an expert in dryland farming is the head winemaker and the vineyards are reaching an average of fifteen years old and are singing the song of the terrior even more clearly!
