The award winning malt whisky is back. Aged on heavy toasted, new French oak sourced from 195 year-old Vosges forests. The nose suggests clove, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The palate is full, round and sweet, with the spice and vanilla following and complimenting the core distillery characteristerics.
Innovative New Oak Casks
Compass Box work with a small mill in France that produces some of the highest quality cooperage oak in the world. Their work with this mill led to experimenting with secondary maturation of malt whiskies in casks fitted with new French oak heads. This is something no one else in Scotland does. The result is malt whisky with more character and complexity. This technique is used on about 50% of the malt whisky in Oak Cross and it results in a superior finished product.
The Signature Range from Compass Box
Oak Cross is part of the Signature Range from Compass Box. The three Scotch whiskies in this range offer the spectrum of Scotch whisky style, from the delicate, sweet character of Asyla, to the rich, spicy, malty character of Oak Cross, to the peaty-smoky character of Peat Monster. Each is made from casks chosen individually, cask-by-cask, to ensure perfect maturity. The casks are combined according to recipe and returned to wood for “marrying” up to 12 months before bottling. Steps like these enhance complexity, flavour integration and soft mouthfeel. Extra steps, but they’re worth it.
Big, sweet aromas of clove, ginger, cinnnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The palate is full, round and sweet, with the spice and vanilla complementing the core distillery characters and leaving a long finish.
Its rich, bold flavours make it suitable for after-dinner sipping, as an accompaniment to certain cheese and ideal in cocktails.
Dailuaine, Teaninich and two other malt whiskies distilled in the villages of Brora and Longmorn.
Primary maturation, first-fill and refill American oak. Secondary maturation: custom barrels with heavily toasted new French oak heads sourced from 195 year-old Vosges forests.
Bottled at 46% alcohol by volume. Natural colour. Not chill filtered.
From our Compass Box tasting evening:
The Spice Tree was next to be appraised. The constituents are the same as for Oak Cross, but the oak used is different. Thereby hangs a tale. Compass Box were the first whisky makers to use new French oak and the addition of new oak staves to the secondary maturation barrels. As this practice was seen by the Scotch Whisky Association as ‘not traditional’, it effectively ‘outlawed’ Spice Tree as a Scotch whisky..!

Suffice to say, after having to cease production of this remarkable whisky, these clever chaps at Compass Box have now managed to modify the maturation process to satisfy the Scotch Whisky Association and the customers whilst maintaining the distinctive flavour profile of this award-winner:
Clove, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla on the nose leading to sweet richness on the palate with some oakiness apparent over its long finish.
